A Note on Discipline
Signals do not tell the CTO what to do. They tell the CTO where the system is becoming harder to operate — and where intervention will have the highest leverage.
The discipline is not in collecting them. It is not even in reading them correctly. It is in acting on them before the organization is forced to pay for them — when the signal is live but the crisis has not yet arrived, when the intervention is still possible at a reasonable cost, and when the conversation can be economic rather than emergency.
A system whose signals are ignored does not announce its degradation. It compounds it — quietly, predictably, and at a cost that grows with every quarter the signal goes unaddressed.
Systems do not fail when signals appear. They fail when those signals are not acted on early enough to prevent cost from compounding.
